Welcome to the Etiquette Page of the

Isle of Man Indoor Bowling Association.

You're still reading your way through the site, so I'm assuming that there's an inkling of interest on your behalf.

I hope the following article on the etiquette of the game will endorse your decision to join the Isle of Man Indoor Bowling scene and be assured that the game is played in the respectful manner which you would associate with any sport which has the profile of Bowling for and on behalf of the Isle of Man.

Bowling green etiquette remains one of the few sports where common courtesy and etiquette is still prevalent. We should be proud of this. To make the game as enjoyable as possible bowling green etiquette should be promoted to members old and new.

Much of this is common sense but here are some of the main rules of etiquette.

Shake hands with your opponent before commencing the match.

Be on time for your match.

Do not walk across rinks that other people are using.

Do not sit on the 'banked edge' while waiting to play.

Do not move around the head when your opponent is about to deliver his bowl.

Do not do anything to distract your opponent

Stay behind your opponent while they are delivering their bowl.

Wait until your opponents bowl has stopped before taking rink control

Do not obscure the rink boundary markers or the centre line marker

DON'T DROP YOUR BOWLS ONTO THE SURFACE

Have a working knowledge of the Rules of the Game

Switch off your mobile phone.

Shake hands with your opponent after the game.  Win or lose.

During the game encourage your team mates, do not criticize them. Commend good shots and learn to accept that flukes are a part of the game. Sometimes they go for you, sometimes against.

These aren't arcane rules and regulations, just pure and simple manners that help to make the game a pleasant experience. A good sense of humour is probably needed as well.
